The Ghana Water Ltd. (GWL) has announced an emergency shutdown of its Kpong Water Treatment Plant following damage to a raw water transmission pipeline on Thursday, August 28, 2025.

The shutdown has resulted in widespread water supply interruptions in the Tema Metropolis and parts of Accra.

A statement by the Public Relations and Communications Department of the company said, the damage necessitated the immediate shutdown of the plant to pave the way for urgent repair works, which are expected to last three days.

During this period, water supply to households, businesses, and institutions in several communities will be disrupted.

The affected areas include the entire Tema Metropolis and major parts of Accra, such as Ashaiman, Gbetsele, Akatamanso, Klagon, Lashibi, Baatsonaa, Spintex, parts of East Legon, and surrounding communities.

Management has therefore advised residents in these areas to store enough water while the limited supply is still available.

To mitigate the impact of the shutdown, GWL said arrangements were being made to support essential service providers, particularly hospitals and schools.

Such institutions are encouraged to contact the company for assistance through its toll-free line.

The company assured customers that the water supply would be restored immediately after completion of the repair works.

“We sincerely regret the inconvenience this interruption may cause and appreciate the patience and understanding of our valued customers,” the statement added.

The Kpong Treatment Plant is one of the major water supply facilities serving the Greater Accra Region.
