President John Dramani Mahama has expressed gratitude to his colleagues, heads of state from around the world, who either visited or gave him personal calls and messages of condolence and support during the nation’s loss of the eight departed compatriots of the helicopter crash.
“We extend our deepest gratitude. It is this solidarity that affirms the strength of our national and international spirit,” he said.
Liberian Vice President Jeremiah Koung Sr was among the world leaders who joined President Mahama at the Blackstar Square in Accra to mourn the victims of the August 6, 2025, military helicopter crash.
Liberian President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., in an earlier message, extended his deepest condolences to his friend, brother, and counterpart, President Mahama, and the people of Ghana, following the tragic military helicopter crash.
President Boakai expressed profound shock and sorrow over the incident, which claimed the lives of several high-ranking Ghanaian officials.
“It is with profound shock and deep sorrow that we received the tragic news of the military helicopter crash in the Ashanti region,” President Boakai stated.
“This devastating loss transcends the borders of Ghana and is felt deeply by the Liberian people,” he added.
President Boakai fondly recalled the recent presence of Minister Boamah in Liberia during the nation’s Independence Day celebrations, where he stood in solidarity with the Liberian people.
“Only days ago, Minister Boamah graced our national celebrations with warmth, solidarity, and the unmistakable spirit of African brotherhood,” the Liberian Leader reflected.
He emphasised that Minister Boamah’s visit symbolised the strength and enduring bond between Liberia and Ghana — a relationship founded on mutual respect, shared values, and a common vision for the progress of the African continent.
“On behalf of the Government and People of the Republic of Liberia, and in my own name,” President Boakai continued, “I extend our deepest condolences to Your Excellency, the Government and People of Ghana, and especially to the bereaved families who are enduring unimaginable grief at this time.”
Meanwhile, at the state funeral, President Mahama prayed that the funeral bring closure to a grieving nation and that a new dawn would break in which the country would look forward with pride as Ghanaians to a prosperous nation.
“And that today we pray that this will be the beginning as the almighty God heals our land.”
The eight distinguished Ghanaians who lost their lives while on an official duty in the August 6, 2025, military helicopter crash at Adansi Akrofuom in the Ashanti Region included Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence, and Alhaji Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Member of Parliament for Tamale Central and Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology.
Others are Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Mr Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress; and Mr Samuel Aboagye, Deputy Director-General of the National Disaster Management Organisation.
The rest are Wing Commander Peter Anala, Flight Lieutenant Manean Twum Ampadu and Flight Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, all of the Ghana Air Force.
Alhaji Dr Muhammed and Alhaji Limuna were laid to rest on Sunday, 10th August 2025, at the new Military Cemetery at Tse Addo in Accra.
The six remaining victims were laid to rest at the same cemetery after the State Funeral held on Friday, August 15, 2025.
Also in attendance were dignitaries from Ghana, including Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang; First Lady, Mrs Lordina Dramani Mahama; Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin and Acting Chief Justice, Mr Paul Baffoe-Bonnie.
Others are former President John Agyekum Kufuor, former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo with his wife, former First Lady, Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo; former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia with his wife, former Second Lady, Mrs Samira Bawumia.
The rest are former First Lady, Mrs Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings and former First Lady, Mrs Fulera Limann.
