The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has announced a special intervention to provide health insurance cover for the children and widows of those who tragically lost their lives in the Wednesday, August 6, 2025, helicopter crash.

According to the NHIA, the move is part of its commitment to supporting vulnerable families affected by national tragedies.

The policy extension will ensure that the dependents of the victims have access to free healthcare under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) for the foreseeable future.

NHIA Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, described the initiative as a humanitarian response to help ease the burden on the affected families.

The August 6 helicopter crash, which claimed [insert number] lives, sent shockwaves across the nation. The victims included personnel on official duty and civilians, leaving behind dependents now faced with sudden loss and hardship.

The NHIA has indicated that it will work with the relevant agencies to identify all eligible beneficiaries and facilitate a smooth registration process.

The coverage will cater for general medical services, maternal health, child healthcare, and treatment for common illnesses under the NHIS benefit package.

Families of the victims have expressed appreciation for the gesture, describing it as a timely and compassionate intervention.

The NHIA also reaffirmed its broader mission to ensure equitable access to healthcare for all Ghanaians, particularly during the helicopter crash crisis.

Also, President John Mahama has announced the establishment of a dedicated education fund to support the children left behind by the eight individuals who perished in the crash.

Mahama emphasised the moral imperative to safeguard the futures of the bereaved families.

He pledged that the newly created fund would cushion the children from hardship and secure their educational development.

Mahama said “There will be a state funeral on Friday, 15th August. At the funeral, we will announce some programmes for creating a fund that will assist with the education of the children. Friday, I will announce the details of that, so that people who want to contribute to the future of the children they have left behind will have the opportunity to do so.

“I believe that Allah will have mercy on him, forgive him for all his sins, and accept him.”
