Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed profound sorrow over the tragic military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of several high-profile government officials and military personnel in the Adansi area of the Ashanti Region.

In a heartfelt statement issued this afternoon, the former President described the incident as a devastating loss to the nation. “The entire nation is profoundly shocked and saddened by the tragic news of the military helicopter crash,” he wrote.

The crash led to the untimely deaths of:

Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence

Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Member of Parliament for Tamale Central and Minister for Environment and Science

Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator

Dr. Samuel Sarpong, National Vice Chairman of the ruling NDC

Samuel Aboagye

Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala

Flight Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu

Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah

The deaths were officially announced by the Chief of Staff at the Office of the President, Mr. Julius Debrah, earlier in the day.

Former President Akufo-Addo revealed that he has personally conveyed his condolences to President John Dramani Mahama, the Commander-In-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, and Johnson Asiedu Nketia, Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“I condole with our gallant men of the Ghana Air Force at this concerning time and salute their indispensable role in the public life of our country,” he added. “My deepest sympathies also go to the bereaved families, who have lost cherished loved ones in service to our country.”

The former President concluded his message with a solemn prayer:

“May they find peaceful rest in the Bosom of the Almighty until the Last Day of the Resurrection, when we shall all meet again.”

The crash has sent ripples of grief across the nation, particularly in Tamale Central, where the late Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed served as a respected MP and Minister. Citizens, colleagues, and constituents alike have begun to gather for memorials as the country prepares to honour the lives and legacies of those lost in service.

As investigations continue into the cause of the crash, Ghanaians remain united in mourning, standing together through one of the most tragic moments in recent national memory.
