Veteran politician and former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has officially declared his intention to contest the party’s upcoming flagbearership race, boldly asserting that he is the party’s “best bet” to secure victory in the 2028 general elections.

Speaking at a briefing in Accra to announce his intention to contest the flagbearership slot, Kwabena Agyepong said his decision stems from a deep commitment to restoring the party’s grassroots confidence and bridging the growing gap between leadership and ordinary supporters.

“Politics belongs to the grassroots, belongs to the ordinary people. Not the petty scabble of contented partisan elites. Let us not weigh down this party any further with a choice that will eventually call for unending efforts of reconciliation, reparation from hate speeches. With me, KAA, the NPP has a clear path to unity and victory. We need a pair of clean hands, a clear mind and a compassionate heart to lead our nation and the party. I, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, stand ready to work with you, ready to rebuild, ready to restore hope for our party and every Ghanaian,” he stated.

The former presidential spokesperson emphasised his track record of loyalty and service to the party, highlighting his decades of experience as both an administrator and a campaign strategist. He also pledged to pursue policies that prioritise economic growth, job creation, and social cohesion.

Agyepong called on the party’s delegates to look beyond established power blocs and choose a leader capable of broadening the NPP’s appeal ahead of the 2028 polls.

The NPP has announced a GH¢600,000 fee for nomination and filing for aspirants vying to lead the party. Kwabena Agyepong’s declaration sets the stage for what is expected to be a highly competitive flagbearership race as the party prepares to transition from the current administration.

The Presidential Primary, which will be the National Congress to elect the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections, is scheduled to be held on Saturday, January 31, 2026.

The vetting of all submitted applications is slated to take place between September 15 and September 22, 2025.

Following the vetting, the party’s National Council is expected to receive and deliberate on the vetting committee’s recommendations on September 29, 2025.

Between September 30 and October 3, 2025, any aspirants with concerns about the vetting outcomes will be allowed to file petitions.
