Tensions escalated in the Ablekuma North constituency on Friday, July 11, 2025, when Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei Asamoah, Deputy National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), was allegedly assaulted by suspected National Democratic Congress (NDC) thugs during a rerun of parliamentary primaries at the Odorkor Methodist 1 polling station.

The incident left Asamoah injured and raised concerns over growing political violence amid an already heated electoral atmosphere.

Eyewitnesses report that the NPP official was attacked without provocation while coordinating party operations at the polling centre.

According to accounts from NPP officials, the attackers—believed to be aligned with the NDC—stormed the venue aggressively, disrupted the voting process, and triggered a brief scuffle that temporarily halted the polls.

Party supporters on the ground intervened, preventing the situation from escalating further.

The matter has been reported to the police, who have launched an investigation. As of this report, no arrests have been made.

The rerun follows a High Court order instructing the Electoral Commission (EC) to conduct fresh polls in 19 polling stations where results from the initial primaries were not collated or certified.

Over 6,800 NPP delegates are expected to vote to select the party’s parliamentary candidate for the 2024 general elections.

The stakes remain high for both major parties. For the NDC, a win by first-time candidate and lawyer Ewurabena Aubynn would mark a significant breakthrough in a traditionally NPP-leaning constituency and bolster the party’s urban influence.

Meanwhile, the NPP aims to reclaim the seat through former MP Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, who is leveraging her experience and past achievements in the area.

The incident has cast a shadow over what was meant to be a decisive and peaceful resolution to the primary election controversy.

However, two prominent NPP figures, Mavis Hawa Koomson and parliamentary candidate Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie were also allegedly assaulted by unidentified macho men during a heated political activity in the Ablekuma North constituency.
