The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested a suspect in connection with the alleged murder of Stephen King Amoah, an Immigration Officer, whose burnt body was discovered in a gutter near the GBC Satellite, opposite Comet Estate, on the morning of Wednesday, July 9, 2025.

The chilling discovery has shocked residents of the Ashongman and Taifa communities and sparked a major police investigation into what appears to be a premeditated and financially motivated crime.

Arrest of key suspect

According to a statement signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, the suspect—Bright Aweh—was arrested during a targeted police operation after emerging as the last known individual to have interacted with the deceased.

Investigators say Aweh had met with Amoah on the evening of Thursday, July 3, following a WhatsApp message he sent to the officer that included images of large amounts of cash and an invitation to meet at a nearby location. Amoah, who lived at Ashongman Estate, left his home around 8:00 p.m. and was never seen alive again.

Efforts by family and friends to reach him were unsuccessful as his phone remained off from that evening. His body was discovered six days later, badly burnt and dumped in a drainage channel, sparking suspicions of foul play.

GH₵500,000 cash mystery

During police interrogation, suspect Bright Aweh allegedly admitted to giving the deceased GH₵500,000 in cash on the night of their meeting.

He claimed that part of the amount was intended to help Amoah settle debts, while the rest was to be held for future collection.

However, police say Aweh was unable to explain the source of the funds and provided conflicting accounts, raising further suspicion and complicating the investigation.

Superintendent Obeng noted that these inconsistencies are central to the ongoing inquiry and that further questioning and forensic analysis will determine whether the motive behind the murder was linked to the money or a deeper conspiracy.

Body identified by family

Despite the extent of the burns on the body, family members of Stephen King Amoah were able to positively identify him.

Officers from the Taifa Police Station, accompanied by the complainant and six relatives of the deceased, visited the Police Hospital morgue, where the body had been deposited for autopsy and preservation.

According to the police, the victim’s family had reported his disappearance shortly after his failure to return home on July 3, prompting an early search. It was during this process that the tip-off about a charred body found in a gutter near GBC Satellite was reported.

The circumstances of the death—particularly the pre-arranged meeting, cash transaction, and subsequent burning of the body—have led investigators to suspect that this was a carefully orchestrated crime, not a random act of violence.

Police assure full probe and justice

The Accra Regional Police Command has condemned the killing in the strongest terms and assured the public that a full-scale investigation is underway to uncover all persons connected to the crime.

“The police will pursue every lead to ensure that justice is served,” said Superintendent Obeng. She further urged anyone with information relevant to the case to contact the nearest police station or call the emergency lines 18555 or 192.

The case has reignited public concern over rising cases of targeted killings, financial fraud, and organised crime in urban communities.
