The Central East Regional Police Command has arrested one suspect in connection with a violent robbery that occurred in the early hours of Sunday, July 6, 2025, near Dabanyin, close to Gomoa Buduatta Junction, along the busy Kasoa-Winneba road.

According to a police statement, the suspect, identified as Mohammed Bello, is believed to be part of a five-man gang that ambushed vehicles and robbed drivers and passengers around 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the gang forcibly took several mobile phones and an undisclosed amount of money from their victims before fleeing the scene.

Swift Police response leads to arrest

Police say they acted swiftly upon receiving information about the robbery. Officers managed to arrest Mohammed Bello in the vicinity while he attempted to escape under the cover of darkness.

A search conducted on him led to the recovery of several items suspected to have been stolen during the attack.

These include cash totalling GH₵3,740.00, two Samsung smartphones, a Tecno Spark 20, an Itel keypad phone, an Itel power bank, a lady’s purse, five sticks of cigarettes, a wristwatch, a headset, a mobile phone charger head, and a pair of sandals. The sandals have already been identified by one of the victims as their property.

Four victims suffer gunshot wounds

Meanwhile, four victims who sustained gunshot wounds during the robbery are currently receiving medical care at a nearby hospital.

Medical officials say their conditions are stable.

The victims have expressed their appreciation to the police for the prompt arrest and their assurance to bring the other perpetrators to justice.

Manhunt underway for remaining suspects

The Central East Regional Police Command has confirmed that intelligence-led operations are underway to arrest the remaining four suspects.

Police believe the gang operated together in a coordinated fashion and are treating the case as part of a broader pattern of criminal activity targeting highway travellers.

Public urged to assist investigation

The Command has also appealed to the general public, particularly anyone who may have been a victim of the robbery but is yet to report, to come forward to assist with the investigation.

They urged eyewitnesses and persons with information on the suspects’ whereabouts to contact the nearest police station.

“The safety of the public remains our top priority,” the Regional Command emphasized.

“We want to reassure citizens that all those involved in this violent robbery will be brought to book.”

Heightened security along Kasoa-Winneba road

This incident adds to growing security concerns on the Kasoa-Winneba stretch, which has in recent years seen several robbery cases, especially at dawn.

The police say they will increase patrols and visibility in the area to deter further criminal activity.

Residents and commuters are advised to be vigilant when travelling at odd hours and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.

The arrest of Mohammed Bello marks a critical breakthrough in the case, and the police are hopeful that with continued cooperation from the public, the remaining fugitives will soon be in custody.
