Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey is reportedly set to leave English Premier League side Arsenal, with Spanish giants Barcelona emerging as his likely next destination.
According to Spanish media reports, Barcelona are in advanced negotiations to sign the 32-year-old on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract with Arsenal at the end of June.
Partey, who joined Arsenal in 2020 from Atlético Madrid, has decided not to renew his deal with the London club.
After an injury-hit campaign, the midfielder is said to be eager for a new challenge and is particularly keen on returning to Spain, where he previously enjoyed great success in La Liga.
Spanish outlet Fichajes, cited by Ghanasoccernet, reports that Barcelona have stepped up talks with Partey’s representatives as they look to bolster their midfield ahead of the new season.
Having already secured goalkeeper Joan Garcia and making progress on deals for Nico Williams and Roony Bardghji, the Catalan club is now prioritising Partey’s experience and versatility.
Barcelona’s sporting director Deco is believed to be a strong admirer of Partey’s qualities. He reportedly views the Ghanaian international as a player who can bring strength, tactical discipline, and leadership to a midfield that has lacked depth in recent seasons.
The fact that Partey would arrive on a free transfer also makes the deal financially appealing for Barcelona, who continue to manage spending under La Liga’s strict financial regulations.
Despite interest from several other clubs across Europe and the Middle East, Barcelona’s profile and the lure of a return to La Liga are said to make them favourites to land the former Atlético Madrid star.
A formal offer is expected soon, and Partey could be unveiled before the start of Barcelona’s pre-season preparations.
