The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced a high-level meeting with all flagbearer hopefuls ahead of its 2026 primaries, as the party moves swiftly to contain rising tensions and enforce internal discipline.

A statement signed by the NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, said the party’s National Steering Committee has resolved to convene a joint meeting between all declared flagbearer hopefuls, the Steering Committee, and the National Council of Elders.

The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, July 3, 2025.

According to the statement, the aim is to “discuss matters of mutual interest” and foster party unity ahead of what is expected to be a keenly contested presidential primary.

The party leadership hopes the dialogue will help defuse growing factionalism and bring all camps in line with NPP’s core values and constitutional obligations.

The NPP’s call for calm and cohesion comes amid mounting concerns that early jostling for the flagbearer slot is creating divisions, with public comments and private caucuses intensifying political tensions within the party base.

Abronye referred to disciplinary committee

In a parallel development, the party has referred its Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye, to the National Disciplinary Committee.

He stands accused of defying party directives by continuing to make what the statement described as “unguarded public comments,” despite prior warnings issued by the National Council.

This referral marks one of the clearest indications yet that the party intends to crack down on indiscipline at all levels.

The Steering Committee’s decision signals that no official will be spared if found undermining internal unity or disregarding the leadership’s orders.

Ban on pro-aspirant caucuses

In a further move to maintain order, the party has also imposed an immediate ban on all caucuses or meetings organised by current or former party executives and government appointees in support of specific presidential hopefuls.

The NPP says such activities directly violate party rules and threaten the fairness and cohesion of the flagbearer selection process.

The statement reminded all members of their constitutional duty to preserve party unity and publicly support party decisions, warning against actions that could destabilize internal structures or promote disunity.

“The Party wishes to once again remind members of their constitutional obligation to protect party unity, to abide by and publicly support the Party’s decisions, and to refrain from engaging in acts that threaten party cohesion,” the statement emphasized.

With the 2026 general elections on the horizon, the NPP appears determined to present a unified front by reining in early factionalism and enforcing party discipline from the grassroots to the top hierarchy.
