Kumasi and Tamale airports extend operating hours

The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) have announced the extension of operational hours at two of the country’s key regional airports—Prempeh I International Airport in Kumasi and the Tamale International Airport.

The new hours take effect on Saturday, June 1, 2025.

The decision is aimed at improving accessibility, convenience, and airline scheduling flexibility at both airports, which have seen a rise in passenger traffic in recent years due to increasing economic activity and tourism.

Prempeh I Airport to operate until 11 PM

At the Kumasi-based Prempeh I International Airport, operational hours have been extended by three hours—from the current 8:00 pm closure to 11:00 pm.

This change is expected to accommodate more evening flights and provide greater flexibility for travellers flying in and out of Ghana’s second-largest city.

Tamale International gets four-hour extension

In the north, the Tamale International Airport will now operate until 10:00 pm, an increase from the previous closing time of 6:00 pm.

This four-hour extension is particularly significant for the Northern Region’s development and is expected to support the growing number of business and development missions to the area.

Airlines advised to adjust schedules

A joint statement from the GCAA and GACL confirmed that a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) has already been issued to notify all airlines of the new schedule.

The Civil Aviation Authority is also urging domestic carriers to revise and expand their flight timetables in response to the extended operational hours.

“Domestic airlines have been advised to increase their frequency to and from both airports,” the statement said, suggesting that travellers can expect a rise in evening flight options in the coming weeks.

Public encouraged to plan accordingly

The GCAA and GACL have also encouraged the travelling public to take note of the revised schedules and plan their journeys with the new operational windows in mind.

The changes, they emphasised, are part of broader efforts to modernise and regionalise air transportation in Ghana.

With these extended hours, both Prempeh I and Tamale airports are better positioned to serve as regional aviation hubs, easing congestion at the Kotoka International Airport in Accra and providing more convenient options for travellers across the country.
