Popular Ghanaian religious leader, Prophet Nicholas Osei, also known as Prophet Kumchacha, has sparked widespread discussion after publicly advocating for polygamy.

Speaking on JoyPrime TV, the outspoken prophet encouraged Ghanaian youth to consider marrying three wives, claiming it is a practical solution to social and moral issues.

According to Prophet Kumchacha, marrying multiple wives is not only biblically acceptable but also culturally relevant in the African context. He argued that polygamy could reduce the rate of unmarried women, curb sexual immorality, and help manage what he referred to as the “growing pressure of secret relationships and infidelity among the youth.”

“If you ask me, Kumchacha, I’ll tell you that I don’t have money. But when God blesses me to be rich, I’ll marry three. Any man who wants to grow old, eat and sleep well, and have good sex,” Kumchacha asserted.

He advised the youth to marry three wives when they are rich.

The statement has gone viral on social media, triggering intense debates among Ghanaians online, with some supporting his traditional views while others criticise them as outdated and misogynistic.

Polygamy in Ghana

While polygamy is recognised under customary and Islamic law in Ghana, it is not permitted under the country’s civil marriage laws. This has created a dual system where some communities accept plural marriages, while others remain strictly monogamous.

Religious figures like Kumchacha, known for their bold and controversial statements, have occasionally challenged modern interpretations of Christian doctrine that reject multiple marriages.
