Energy and Green Transition Minister John Jinapor has announced the retrieval of 2,637 missing containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

The recovery of these containers marks a major step in addressing logistical inefficiencies and ensuring accountability in the energy sector.

This move aligns with Ghana’s broader efforts toward transparency and efficiency as part of its green transition strategy. Minister Jinapor emphasised the importance of securing ECG’s assets to support reliable electricity distribution and reinforce trust in public infrastructure management.

The Spokesperson and Head of Communications for the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, Richmond Rockson, said the containers were located at various terminals within the Tema Port.

According to him, the probe, led by a committee comprising National Security, the Ministry of Transport, Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), and Customs, discovered the containers as of April 30, 2025, at the following locations:

  • 860 at Meridian Port Services
  • 1,237 at GPHA Terminals
  • 272 have already been evacuated by National Security
  • 194 at Amaris Terminal
  • 20 at ATLAS Manufacturing Terminal

An investigative report revealed that ECG had 2,491 uncleared containers filled with cables and other essential equipment at the Tema Port. However, an independent audit found only 1,134 containers, leaving 1,357 unaccounted for.

During a tour of aluminium smelting facilities in Shai-Osudoku on Friday, March 28, 2025, authorities discovered several coils of stolen ECG cables, which were components of the missing containers, melted into blocks and further processed into aluminium rods for export.
