5 things you never knew about condoms

Condoms are one of the most effective and accessible methods of birth control and protection against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

While most people are familiar with how condoms work, many surprising facts about them often go unnoticed.

Whether you’re curious about condom history, materials, or lesser-known uses, here are five things you never knew about condoms.

1. Condoms have been around for thousands of years

You might think condoms are a modern invention, but their history dates back over 3,000 years. Ancient Egyptians used linen sheaths, and there’s evidence that the Romans and Chinese also used various forms of condoms for protection and hygiene.

The first documented use of animal-intestine condoms appeared in Europe in the 16th century. Today, latex condoms are the most common, offering improved comfort and effectiveness.

2. Not all condoms are made of latex

Although latex condoms are the most widely available, there are other materials suitable for people with latex allergies or sensitivities.

Polyurethane condoms and polyisoprene condoms are popular non-latex alternatives. There are even lambskin condoms, made from sheep intestines, which are effective for pregnancy prevention but not reliable for STI protection.

3. Condoms can expire

Yes, condoms come with an expiration date — and using an expired condom increases the risk of breakage. Most condoms have a shelf life of three to five years, depending on the material. Heat, sunlight, and friction can also degrade a condom’s effectiveness. Always check the packaging and store condoms in a cool, dry place.

4. Flavoured condoms exist for a reason

Flavoured condoms aren’t just a novelty —they’re specifically designed for oral sex. The flavours help mask the taste of latex and make the experience more enjoyable. However, they’re not always ideal for vaginal or anal sex, as some flavored condoms contain sugar, which can cause irritation or yeast infections.

5. Condoms can be a fun part of foreplay

Using condoms doesn’t have to be boring. Many couples incorporate textured condoms, warming condoms, or even glow-in-the-dark condoms into their intimate moments to enhance pleasure and excitement. With so many varieties available, condoms can play a fun and functional role in your sex life.
