The Municipal Chief Executive for Adentan, Ella Esiman Nongo, has confirmed that three individuals lost their lives in the Adentan Municipality as a result of Sunday’s flooding.
“In Lakeside, we lost two people, including a four-year-old girl at Nanakrom and a gentleman around New Legon,” she said.
Addressing public concern over the recurring floods in Accra—largely blamed on poor urban planning and the obstruction of natural water channels—Ms. Nongo pledged firm action against unauthorised structures built on waterways.
She made these remarks during a radio interview on Accra-based Citi FM on Monday, May 19, 2025.
Ms. Nongo emphasised the gravity of the situation, noting that numerous residents were still trapped in their homes due to blocked drainage systems caused by illegal construction on water paths.
“As we speak, some people have been trapped in their homes. Because a lot more people have built on our waterways, and that is not helping us. So, what we intend to do is to take a very drastic decision against it. It will be a decision that will hurt a few but save a lot of people,” she stated.
She added that the upcoming measures would involve tearing down such structures. “Demolition of properties will be part of what we will do, because dredging cannot continue. That alone might not solve the problem,” she said.
Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has confirmed that no casualties were recorded following the heavy rainstorm that hit Accra on Sunday, May 18, 2025.
Chief Disaster Control Officer Mohammed Jafaro, disclosed that NADMO received numerous distress calls from affected residents in parts of the capital, including Adenta, Tema, and Kaneshie. In response, emergency teams were deployed to provide assistance.
