A fuel tanker accident on the busy Accra–Nsawam highway has claimed at least three lives and left several others injured after a fierce fire engulfed multiple vehicles early Saturday morning.

The crash occurred near the Teacher Mante section of the road, a major link between Accra and the Eastern Region. Preliminary reports indicate the tanker was involved in a collision before erupting into flames, which quickly spread to nearby vehicles.

Eyewitnesses said thick plumes of black smoke filled the sky as motorists and nearby residents fled the area, while emergency responders rushed to the scene.

Authorities confirmed that several vehicles were destroyed in the blaze. The injured were transported to nearby health facilities for treatment.

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service, the Ghana Police Service and the National Ambulance Service worked to contain the fire, rescue victims and manage traffic.

Firefighters battled to prevent the flames from spreading further, as police cordoned off parts of the highway to allow rescue and recovery operations.

The incident caused heavy congestion along the stretch, one of the country’s busiest highways, forcing motorists to seek alternative routes.

Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the crash.

The latest incident has renewed concerns over road safety and the transportation of hazardous materials on major highways, where heavy-duty trucks frequently share lanes with passenger vehicles.
