Three individuals have been arrested by the Ghana Police Service for allegedly impersonating the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno on social media platforms, as part of a broader cybercrime operation.
The arrests were carried out by the Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team following intelligence-led investigations into online impersonation and fraud activities.
The suspects have been identified as Gideon Awudi, 25; Edem Soku, 33; and Judith Soku, 31.
According to a police report, the suspects are believed to have created and operated fake social media accounts in the names of the Speaker of Parliament, the IGP, and other prominent personalities.
Using these false identities, they allegedly targeted unsuspecting members of the public and attempted to defraud them through various online schemes.
Police investigations further revealed that the suspects were involved in multiple forms of cyber-related fraud.
These include mobile money fraud, credit card fraud, airtime sale fraud, and online sales scams conducted across different social media platforms. Victims were reportedly lured with false promises or deceptive offers, leading to financial losses.
The suspects were arrested at Sogakope and Dabala in the Volta Region after a sustained operation that covered several areas, including Sogakope, Dzodze, and Penyi.
The operation was based on gathered intelligence and careful monitoring of the suspects’ online activities over a period of time.
All three suspects are currently in police custody and are assisting with ongoing investigations. The Ghana Police Service says further updates will be provided as investigations continue and has reiterated its commitment to combating cybercrime and protecting the public from online fraud.
Police have also advised the public to remain cautious when interacting with social media accounts claiming to belong to public officials and to report suspicious online activities to the appropriate authorities.
