Over 220 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) from across Ghana have thrown their full support behind former Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s bid to once again lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as its flagbearer in the 2028 presidential election.
This forceful endorsement was made public on Monday during a press conference in Accra, shortly after a closed-door stakeholder engagement between Dr. Bawumia and the former MMDCEs—many of whom served under the NPP administration from 2017 to 2024.
“Following extensive consultations with all aspirants, and after a thorough assessment of their vision, competence, and commitment to the NPP’s progress, we are convinced beyond any doubt that Dr. Bawumia is the best candidate to lead the NPP to victory in 2028,” the MMDCEs declared.
A powerful political machine mobilises
The declaration was more than ceremonial. The group, representing a powerful grassroots political network with extensive electoral experience, announced a strategic commitment to actively campaign, organise, and resource Dr. Bawumia’s anticipated bid.
With 95% of the forum’s members having previously served as Constituency or Regional Executives—many for more than a decade—their declaration represents one of the strongest internal endorsements yet for the former Vice-President.
“Our endorsement is not merely symbolic,” their statement read. “It is a strategic and operational commitment. We will deploy our combined political experience and networks to ensure Dr. Bawumia’s message resonates in every corner of Ghana.”
Track record, vision, and reach
In explaining their decision, the MMDCEs listed a number of reasons why they believe Dr. Bawumia stands out among all potential aspirants.
They praised his record in public service, particularly as Vice-President, where he spearheaded transformational digital policies that modernised the Ghanaian economy.
“As Vice-President, Dr. Bawumia led critical initiatives such as the Ghana Card rollout, Mobile Money Interoperability, and Paperless Port reforms. These policies didn’t just make headlines; they reshaped systems, reduced corruption, and improved service delivery across sectors,” they noted.
They further lauded his data-driven approach to governance, describing it as essential for Ghana’s next phase of economic and social transformation.
A unifier and grassroots mobiliser
Beyond his track record, the former MMDCEs commended Dr. Bawumia for his unifying leadership style within the NPP.
“Dr. Bawumia has consistently engaged all factions of the party, demonstrating inclusiveness and humility,” they said.
“His approach has fostered internal cohesion and made him a natural rallying point for the party’s grassroots.”
They emphasised his accessibility and ability to connect with the base of the party as key strengths that would help energise the NPP’s campaign machinery.
Bawumia’s electability: NPP’s safest bet
The former local government appointees believe that Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy offers the NPP its best chance of winning the 2028 elections.
“He is known in every corner of the country. His face, name, and record are already recognised by voters. He gives the party a head start in the election race,” they argued.
Citing electoral data, the MMDCEs asserted that Dr. Bawumia’s previous nationwide campaign presence ensures that the NPP would start the 2028 race with a minimum of 41% electoral support—a statistical edge that no new candidate could immediately command.
“Ghana’s electoral history shows that continuity with a known candidate offers more security than rolling the dice on a fresh face with zero national exposure,” the statement added.
Consolidation and innovation
Describing Dr. Bawumia as the ideal blend of continuity and transformation, the MMDCEs noted that he has both the experience to consolidate Ghana’s democratic and economic gains, and the vision to introduce fresh ideas for the country’s future.
“He understands the foundations of what has been built over the last two decades—and he knows what must be done next,” they said.
Action plan: From endorsement to execution
Far from being a passive endorsement, the group laid out a robust action plan to campaign actively for Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy.
“We are activating our networks across all 16 regions. We will mobilise at the grassroots level, go door-to-door, counter misinformation, raise funds, and provide logistical support.”
The former MMDCEs said they are confident that with coordinated efforts, the NPP can maintain unity and momentum all the way to 2028—starting with a decisive flagbearership victory for Dr. Bawumia when the party holds its internal elections on January 31, 2026.
Parliamentarians already on board
The MMDCEs’ declaration follows last week’s announcement that a majority of NPP Members of Parliament—approximately 65 out of the party’s 88 MPs—have also publicly endorsed Dr. Bawumia.
This growing consensus from influential party figures, both in Parliament and at the grassroots, appears to signal a groundswell of support consolidating behind the former Vice-President even before the party formally opens nominations.
Call to action: Rally behind Bawumia
In their closing remarks, the MMDCEs called on all NPP members, delegates, and Ghanaians at large to rally behind Dr. Bawumia for the good of the party and the country.
“The stakes in 2028 are too high for experimentation. Ghana needs a steady, visionary, and proven leader—and that leader is Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia,” they concluded.
With the NPP’s flagbearership contest set for early 2026, Dr. Bawumia’s early show of force from key party constituencies could give him a commanding advantage as the race unfolds.
