The Savannah Regional Police Intelligence Department has arrested 22 Togolese nationals in connection with suspected illegal mining activities (galamsey) in the West Gonja Municipality of the Savannah Region.

The arrests were made on January 23 after police intercepted a Kia truck, with registration number BA 223-12, driven by Abdul Majeed Yakubu.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects, all believed to be Togolese nationals, were travelling to Tuntumba—a community known for illegal mining activities—with the intent of engaging in galamsey operations.

The suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to be handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service for the appropriate immigration and legal procedures.

Police say investigations are ongoing, and further updates will be provided as the case develops.

Galamsey continues to pose a severe threat to Ghana’s natural resources, with the Pra Anum Forest Reserve being the latest victim.

Recent reports indicated that the forest, which is known for its rich biodiversity and ecological importance, has been severely degraded due to uncontrolled mining activities.
