Members of Parliament (MPs) on Monday commended the senior women’s national soccer team, the Black Queens, for their steady progress and remarkable performance at the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON 2024) in Morocco.

The Black Queens defeated Algeria in the quarter-final stage last Saturday to qualify for the semi-final for the first time since 2016.

The House praised the players, the Ghana Football Association, the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and the Technical Team for their hard work, outstanding performance and resilience shown so far in the tournament.

Mr. Ernest Henry Norgbey, the Chairman of the Youth and Sports Committee of Parliament and Member of Parliament for Ashaiman, in a statement read on the floor of Parliament on Monday, urged Ghanaians both home and abroad to rally behind the team to achieve more laurels and bring home the coveted trophy.

“This achievement is not only a sporting milestone, but a celebration of Ghanaian resilience, unity and excellence. The Black Queens have consistently demonstrated commendable resilience, focus, and commitment throughout the tournament,” the lawmaker stated, adding,” they have, indeed, represented the nation with dignity and strength both on and off the field.”

The Ashaiman Legislator noted that at a time when the younger generation sought inspiration and leadership, the Black Queens had stood tall as an embodiment of what can be accomplished through hard work, teamwork and belief in oneself.

The legislator said the team’s achievement aligned with the government’s broader resetting agenda across all sectors of the economy.

“The Parliament of Ghana stands firmly behind the Black Queens as they continue their quest for glory,” he assured.

He underscored the need for more investment in sports infrastructure to unearth sporting talents and enhance sports development in the country.

Mr. Vincent Ekow Assafuah, the Member of Parliament for Old Tafo and Ranking Member on Youth and Sports Committee, joined in applauding the heroic performance of the Black Queens in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

He observed that the success of the team was anchored on the foundation laid by the previous New Patriotic Party government that invested in women’s premier league with infrastructure and logistical support.

Other members of Parliament also lauded the Black Queens and underscored the need to support the team devoid of partisan politics as the team takes on the host nation, Morocco, in the semi-final stage of the tournament on Tuesday, July 22, 2025.
