Two women facing charges for allegedly making abusive remarks about President John Dramani Mahama broke down in tears during court proceedings at the Adenta Circuit Court.

Priscilla Duah Birago, a 29-year-old National Service personnel, and Charity Dede Tetteh, a 29-year-old beautician, are accused of conspiring to publish abusive statements on TikTok following the August 6, 2025 helicopter crash.

Prosecutors say the pair suggested they would have preferred if Mahama had been involved in the crash, adding that many people were dying under his leadership.

The two pleaded not guilty to conspiracy, offensive conduct, and breach of the peace. They have been remanded into custody until September 4, 2025.

Defence counsel, Samuel Kwesi Agyei, argued for bail, stressing that the women had already spent days in custody, learned their lessons, and would not obstruct investigations as their phones were already in police possession.

Prosecutors, led by Chief Inspector Maxwell Lanyo, opposed the application, saying investigations were ongoing and the police had sought High Court approval to access the accused persons’ devices for video evidence.

The presiding judge, Mrs. Angela Attachie, upheld the prosecution’s request and ordered the women to remain in custody until their next appearance.

The development has reignited discussions about the misuse of social media in Ghana, with many calling for stronger enforcement of laws and greater public education on responsible online conduct.
