2 potential flagbearers donate GH¢3m and GH¢1m to NPP

Two prominent figures within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) — 2024 presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and former flagbearer aspirant Kennedy Agyapong — have collectively donated GH¢4 million to support the party’s internal operations and staff welfare.
The contributions come at a critical time, as the party works to rebuild unity and morale following its 2024 electoral defeat and amid preparations for the next round of internal contests.
Dr. Bawumia, the party’s 2024 presidential candidate, donated GH¢3 million in two separate tranches over the first quarter of 2025.
In January, he presented GH¢2 million to the NPP National Treasurer, Mr. Charles Dwamena, on behalf of the party’s General Secretary and National Chairman.
He followed that with an additional GH¢1 million just weeks later, underscoring his sustained commitment to the party’s rank and file.
Mr. Kennedy Agyapong, the outspoken former MP for Assin Central and a former contender for the NPP’s flagbearership, added to the momentum with a GH¢1 million donation at the party’s headquarters in Accra.
He described the gesture as a “necessary step” to help maintain the integrity of the party’s structure during this period of political transition.

A strong signal to the grassroots
The timing and nature of the donations have sent a powerful message to the NPP grassroots, many of whom have long expressed frustration over neglect, particularly when the party is in government.
For many, these contributions represent more than just cash injections — they signal genuine concern for the welfare of those who form the backbone of the party.
“Too often, when parties come into power, the grassroots are forgotten,” said a regional organizer in Kumasi.
“These donations are not just about money — they’re about who is ready to stand with us in tough times.”
This sentiment is expected to weigh heavily in the party’s internal flagbearer contests.
As grassroots members reflect on their choices for the party’s future leadership, the question of who truly supported them in opposition will be a defining factor.

Morale boost amid financial strain
The donations arrive at a time when reports indicate that party workers have gone without pay for several months.
This has heightened tensions within the party’s rank and file, with growing concern about how operational structures will be maintained heading into the next election cycle.
Dr. Bawumia’s GH¢3 million contribution is targeted primarily at staff welfare and grassroots support, while Mr. Agyapong’s GH¢1 million donation is also earmarked for the same purpose.
Both moves have been praised as timely interventions that not only bring relief but also inject optimism into the party’s base.

A challenge to others
Insiders say the actions of Dr. Bawumia and Mr. Agyapong could set a new tone in the race for leadership within the NPP.
With the party facing both internal reorganization and external challenges, potential flagbearer hopefuls may feel increased pressure to demonstrate their commitment not just through words, but concrete action.
In a political climate where apathy from disillusioned party members has been blamed for electoral losses, the donations offer a potential lifeline.
They also serve as a strategic pivot, aimed at rebuilding the trust between party leadership and the base.
As the NPP looks toward redefining its leadership and reconnecting with its base, the significance of these donations cannot be overstated.
They may well prove to be early indicators of the kind of leadership party faithful expect — one rooted in empathy, responsiveness, and readiness to act when it matters most.
Whether symbolic or strategic, the GH¢4 million donated by Dr. Bawumia and Mr. Agyapong may be remembered not just for the money, but for the message it sent: the grassroots matter — and their voices, now more than ever, will shape the future of the NPP.
